Week 1: Introduction the Investigative study Module and Digital Deepfakes
Why do some filmmakers say no CGI?
I personally think that overusing CGI affects the immersion.
Think about what impression this might give to the audience?
Gives the impression that film must al be done with practical effects to look more realistic.
Do such claim help or hurt visual effects as an art form?
I do not think it impacts that much, but even draws more attention to the topic
Essay requirements.
Ideas:
Interest: compositing, nuke, Ai in filmmaking/editing
Color correction, clean-ups, rotos
Examples:
I personally think, that it is okay, since they are “public figures” and that being their job, they constantly get exposed to this kind of troubles, but I laso understand that can be annoying since still being their image, that they are using without their consent.
1) Identify Four Potential VFX Topics
Led volumes and In-camera VFX
camera tracking and DMX integration
Real-time previsualization
Camera solving
Ai-assisted roto and clean-up
crown and ecosystem simulation
2) Add Your Research to Your Digital Sketchbook
I will probably investigate about Ai-assisted roto and clean-up, something related to the editing using Ai tools.
How does it work?
Traditional rotoscoping is the process of creating a silhouette to insolate a subject from its background.
With the help of Ai tools we use prompts importing our video to into a tool like Davinci, adobe premier and so on… to paint and generate a seed frame, after that the Ai model analyses the pixels, edges and motion data to later predict and track the subject boundaries forward and backward through the video. More advanced tools generate editable matte/masks, that latter can be refined by a human to find problematic frames, where the subjects moves to fast, changes light or overlaps similar colours, and can be corrected.
The clean-up has a very similar function.
3) Include Visual References
Smart Roto ( Foundry)
Roto brush (Adobe Ae)
4) Draft Working Titles or Questions (Optional)
Example questions:
How does affect the use of Ai in editing VFX footage?
Week 3: short informal presentation on your research topic
Using 3-4 PowerPoint slides, prepare the following:
- Present and explain your area of research and your question.
- Discuss what you aim to find out.
- Talk through any sources you might use (list these in a slide bibliography).
- You may use some images to illustrate the area of research.
- You can also tell us how you will conduct your research (your proposed method).
The informal presentation should ideally contain:
- Title or research question
- Aims/objectives/keywords
- A list of sources (literature and industrial)
- Images to illustrate the area of research
- A sentence or two on how you think you will conduct the research
- What am I actually researching?
I am measuring the impact of AI on the VFX industry
- What is my question?
How does affect the use of Ai in editing VFX footage?
- How will I investigate it?
I will use different sources, such as online articles, informative videos, industry interviews, and so on…
- Why this topic interests you.
I consider this topic as important, because in my opinion affects directedly the industry and is an important modern topic to think about.
I chose this question because I think the integration of AI in the industry is very important to understand since is transforming the industry in the way that is automating repetitive processes and enhancing creative processes, the Ai tools still not a replacement but an assistance for VFX artists
